About Chatni
Tapris are the essence of Mumbai. A Tapri is classic Mumbai slang for a small, informal street stall found on almost every corner of the city. Where people stop to share a chai cutting (one cup shared between two), take a quick bite, and a quick escape in the middle of a frantic day. Tapris are a ‘third space’ where ideas are debated, family matters settled, and laughter is loud, spontaneous, & unapologetically chaotic.
Mumbai is a city shaped by people from countless cultures. This diversity has created its own language, rhythm, and spirit—fondly known as Mumbaiya. That’s why we call this space Mumbai-ya Tapri: a celebration of the city, its people, and the everyday rituals that bring them together.
Here at Mumbai-ya Tapri I want to bring to you the classic foods and the ethos of the Mumbai I grew up in; The bold spices, the nostalgic flavours and everything in between.
The word Chatni comes from Sanskrit and literally means “to lick.” Traditionally, chatni is eaten with your fingers—dab a little on your finger and, quite simply, lick it off. That’s part of the joy.
Chatni comes in many forms, and across India you’ll find countless regional variations. In a Maharashtrian household, it’s almost guaranteed that at least one chatni is always ready. Popular favourites include peanut (shengdana) chatni, sesame (til) chatni, and linseed (javas) chatni, among many others.
Growing up, chatni was a constant presence in my life. My mum always had a jar sitting on the kitchen table. My grandmother would have at least three different varieties laid out on her dining table. And my aunty would lovingly pack a lunchbox of bhakri (a millet-based Indian flatbread), dal, fresh onion, and chatni for my farmer uncle to take to the fields.
These chatni’s have been an integral part of my everyday meals. They bring depth, warmth, and flavour to even the simplest dishes—and the best way to enjoy them is still the traditional way: with your fingers, and a happy lick at the end.
